One site that will be a truly magnificent resource when it finally reaches critical mass (and, sorry, ten million pages or not, it isn’t there yet – entire states with no representation at all?) is the Library of Congress newspaper digitization program at http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/. Dick Eastman mentioned it in his blog/newsletter and it had been a while so I went over to have another look at it. The layout is logical, the search engine is easy to use, image quality seems excellent, magnification works smoothly and quickly – in short, it’s everything you want a digitized newspaper site to be. Plus, being one of those “of the people, for the people” deals, it’s free. Nice to see that the government can occasionally get something right.
